As a Midlander myself, I know more than most what Black Sabbath means to the people of The Second City. In 1965, a metal sheet labourer from Aston in Birmingham, who played guitar on the side, seriously injured himself at work.
He lost the tips of his fingers.
The poor lad was in excruciating pain and blood was everywhere - worse than the physical agony was the immediate thought that his career as a musician was over at the age of 17.
The kid was devastated.
But after getting over the initial shock, this courageous teenager decided he was going to fight for his dream of becoming one of the world's greatest rock stars, no matter what.
That young man who was Tony Iommi.
Over the next few weeks, Tony went back to the factory and began to make a new set of fingertips for himself.
Yes, you heard that right.
He made fingertips for himself using the industrial rubber the company used to make machine parts in the heart of the factory. He spent hours getting the mix right so that they would fit onto his fingertips in a way that would feel and look as normal as possible.
Tony Strikes Back
Having created new fingertips that he felt reasonably human with, Tony returned to his guitar and found that it did not feel the same in his hands as before. He had lost the tips of his right hand middle and ring fingers and as a left-handed guitarist, the fretboard did not feel “connected” to his hand, and therefore his brain. Refusing to give in, Tony returned to the drawing board and decided that he would make adjustments to his guitar too. He would re-tune the strings in a way that created a dark and heavy reverberation which has echoed through history ever since. This iconic sound became what we know as ‘heavy metal’ and this realisation pushed Tony forward to create the legendary band ‘Black Sabbath,’ who have sold 70 million albums to date. Along with his good friend geezer Butler, Tony had created a new sound and a new era of music with his stubbornness and indefatigability.
With Iommi and Butler not being confident in the quality of their own voices, the search began for a singer to go with Iommi’s down-tuned guitar and Butler’s heavy bass. A childhood friend, John Osborne entered the scene. A quirky character, with a light and squealing voice, John joined Black Sabbath and became its official singer just as Bill Ward became its official drummer. This band created tracks such as ‘Paranoid,’ ‘Iron Man’ and ‘War Pigs,’ an anti-Vietnam song which supposedly represented the band’s anti-war message. The latter has a remastered version from 2019 which currently has around 20 million YouTube views as of 2025.
In truth, John Osborne was probably the least talented musically in Black Sabbath but he was also the loudest personality. Affectionately known as ‘Ozzy,’ he would go on to be known as Ozzy Osbourne.
Black Sabbath's first three albums were Black Sabbath (1970) and Paranoid (1970) followed by Master of Reality (1971). The unique sound of Iommi’s guitar and the powerful lyrics of Geezer Butler - which explored far-ranging topics such as loneliness, mental health, black magic not to mention international politics and war - was making waves through the Midlands and beyond. Ass their fame grew, their wealth grew also. As the wealth grew, the lifestyles became more opulent. As their lifestyles became more opulent, the four band members were able to buy substances which they could not have dreamed of in their teens. By the end of their first decade as an official band, its members were selling thousands of records a week but also taking drugs like most of us drink tea.
While the entire band experimented with drugs and alcohol, Ozzy Osbourne became addicted to several substances. The singer became so uncontrollable that he was eventually sacked by Tony Iommi in 1979. Widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Iommi felt strongly that the band would not progress if the lead singer was unfit for purpose while they were on tour. Powerful live performances were a massive part the Sabbath journey. This would cost the band time, money and street cred, and Iommi knew this better than anybody.
Upon his dismissal, Ozzy Osborne was completely stunned by the sacking, believing the rest of the band to be his best friends in the world, who would forgive his every mistake. But Sabbath had become more than a group of mates down the pub. The band had become way too big to be managed like a friendship group. It was the world's greatest metal band in the 1970s and professionalism was the order of the day, at least when it came to performing live. Despite the devastation that it caused to Ozzy Osbourne, Iommi’s decision was logical as Ozzy was spending more of his time horizontal than he did vertical.
Enter Stage Left: Sharon Rachel Levy
Sharon Levy and Ozzy Osbourne first met in 1970 when Black Sabbath was first starting up. At the time, Sharon was in her late teens and Ozzy was 22. They met because her father, the late Don Arden, was managing Sabbath’s every expanding bank account. While it is not clear exactly when the romantic relationship began between the pair, it is clear that once Ozzy was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, Sharon stepped in immediately and took over as his manager. Learning from her experienced father, Sharon was to become an extremely efficient leader for Ozzy and guided him from a disastrous sacking to an impressive solo career over several years.
The newly-named Sharon Osborne assumed this managerial role from 1979 and this has continued to this day. Sharon has been in charge of Ozzy’s PR, his legal representation, negotiations relating to his royalty percentages, his copyrighted merchandise, legal proceedings against Black Sabbath, Ozzy’s reality TV performances and eventually, his homecoming funeral in the city of his birth. She has coordinated his life and his death to such a degree that when I visited Birmingham City Centre THREE DAYS after her husband’s death, a new book had already been published the blurb of which carried the phrase ‘the much-missed singer Ozzy Osborne.’
Make of that what you will.
But to be fair, after responding to a sacking by drinking even more, and going into a deep depression, Sharon moulded her husband's comeback, remarketing him as ‘The Prince of Darkness.’ This image was ingeniously and carefully crafted by Sharon herself, to lean into the idea that all metal music is synonymous with devil worship, a prominent (if inaccurate) belief which exist even today. In truth, if sees Ozzy’s early interviews, he was more of a Cheeky Chappy than a fully bonified Satanist. But because heavy metal has been historically associated with Satanism, Sharon took this belief, twisted it and turned into her own, with the new and ‘improved’ Ozzy as his own man, separate from his old band mates in Sabbath, complete with gothic makeup and jet-black hair.
On various album covers and swathes of promotion material, Ozzy Osborne was regularly depicted with crucifixes in poses condemned by famous American evangelists such as Jerry Falwell and Jimmy Swaggart as ‘blasphemous.’ Some leading religious figures argued that he was violating one of the Ten Commandments, ‘thou shalt not take the name of thy Lord in vain.’
One wonders if Sharon, a practicing Jew who rejects Jesus as anything but a fraud, was using the cross of Christ (who Jewish scriptures say is burning in human excrement in the fires of hell) in order to insult the Messiah, as opposed to honour him. Ultimately, we do not know exactly what the symbology of Ozzy's ambiguous crucifix photos truly means. However, it is interesting to note that this PR onslaught, using Christian symbols extremely questionably, was orchestrated fully from beginning to end by a Jewish father and his Jewish daughter. As this developed, Tony Iommi had replaced Ozzy with other singers. Fascinatingly, the Black Sabbath lead guitarist wrote the track ‘Devil and Daughter’ on the album ‘Headless Cross,’ with the song widely accepted as being aimed at Don Arden and Sharon Osborne.
Despite the questionable use of religious symbology, sacred to hundreds of millions across the world, Ozzy produced a series of albums which put him back in the big time. ‘Blizzard of Oz,’ ‘Diary of a Madman’ and ‘Speak of the Devil’ sold over five million copies each and amassed a mountain of wealth which Sharon and Ozzy used to move to the United States where they bought a stunning mansion and several sports cars. This was a far cry from the streets of Aston for John ‘Ozzy’ Osborne.
Despite his technical limits as a vocalist, compared to his Sabbath replacement Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy was certainly developing as a song writer. When sober, his lyrics were quite deep and he wrote some classic metal tracks such about his own life (Crazy Train.) He also wrote mockingly about hypocrisy in the church (Miracle Man) and Satanism itself (Mr Crowley.)
Ozzy also had an ear for promising talent, bringing through some young guitarists that went on to become icons in the world of heavy metal. These included Jake E Lee, Zakk Wylde and the late Randy Rhodes, who died in a joyride plane crash in the United States while under the care of Sharon and Ozzy, who had failed to look after the young man as they should have done, given that he was away from home on tour for the first time. It is sad to learn that in the subsequent years Randy’s mother had to take Sharon Osborne to court to secure the royalties which her son was owed for his mesmeric guitar playing on Ozzy’s albums. This was a rather shameful episode from the Osborne's past which the media today will not tell you about. In time, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne became international stars and with tens of millions of pounds at their disposal. Sharon’s attempts to make her children into stars culminated in ‘The Osbornes’ reality TV show.
Blaming The Victim: Sharon the Zionist
In recent months, as the children of Gaza have been massacred live on television before our very eyes, Sharon Osbourne has oddly decided to throw her hat into the ring in order to defend the indefensible. Generally speaking, it is a very disturbing time in human history where anybody, no matter ignorant can sit in front of a camera, buy microphone and say whatever they want the man how imbecilic. At a time when millions of lives are being destroyed in the Middle East by a genocidal state, it is very odd that the mainstream media have given Sharon Osborne – a music manager and X Factor judge – a platform to talk about a complex political matter which is not being solved by the greatest minds of our time. For a X factor judge to be talking about the Arab-Israeli conflict, when we have such mighty intellectuals as Norman Finkelstein and Ilan Pappe, is peculiar to say the least. Being a rock star’s wife is CERTAINLY NOT a qualification to talk about illegal military occupation, terrorism or the international court’s legal definition of the word ‘genocide.’ Without researching the matter in excruciating depth, we can, with safety, that when the Vietnam War was being analysed during the 1970s, Priscilla Presley was not being invited onto CNN to offer her in-depth ‘analysis.’
But in the last year, for no obvious reason, Sharon has appeared on TV number of times talking about the greatness of Israel and the awful people known as "Amars" and “Hazblah” – Hamas, the Palestinian resistance group and Hezbollah, the Lebanese militia. Never the most eloquent at the best of times, Sharon has found herself unsurprisingly out of her depth and has exposed herself as nothing more than an enabler of Zionist genocide. When she appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored in early April, and she made the following statements after Irish group Kneecap were accused of supporting proscribed terrorist groups:
“They (Kneecap) started and now these little people are backtracking, backtracking… saying we don't support “Hazblah” and “Amaas,’” explained this renowned political analyst. “In festivals, people are usually drinking, doing whatever… (sic) their attitude (that of Kneecap) is one of anger, it's not peace.”
At this point, it is important to note that what Sharon is saying here is this: as Israeli kills a hundred Palestinians a day, it is important for artists to either remain utterly silent or to only talk about peace. They are not permitted, according to Sharon, to show any anger at the murder of over 60,000 children in Gaza including a minimum of 20,000 children. She is far more offended by the emotion being shown during a genocide than the genocide itself.
Bizarrely, she adds that “they (Kneecap) should follow the masters, who are U2.”
Wow, just wow.
The ‘master’ – Bono, lead singer of the Irish band – accepted the United States Medal of Freedom from then US President Joe Biden DURING the current genocide of the people of Gaza, a genocide which could NOT take place without the financial and military assistance of Washington and the American Military Industrial Complex.
If Bono is a master, then we may as well turn the lights off now.
Oddly, Sharon then added: “If anybody knows about festival crowds, it's me,” as if that has anything to do with the children whose body parts lay scattered across the Gaza Strip. It is almost as if the suffering of Palestinians, which she did not mention at all in a one-hour long show, means nothing to her. We should not be surprised seeing that she said, on another interview on US TV that “nobody has suffered like the Jews.”
When the Palestinian guest was speaking, Sharon shouted over him and said “That’s what your lot are doing, your lot did that to Jews. Hazblah is killing children, not Israel."
Sharon & Ozzy Osborne: On The Wrong Side Of History
Given her attempts to look informed, it is quite shocking that Sharon seemed, on this evening, to be totally unaware that “Hazblah” have doggedly participated in a one-sided ceasefire for over ten months, failing to fire a single rocket or drone into Israel despite Lebanese territory still being occupied illegally by the Zionist state. “Hazblah” has not killed any children since 7th October 2023, even according to the Israeli media, while Israel has killed over 20,000 Arab children, and that is not including the ones buried under the rubble. The British Medical Journal have argued that the number of Palestinian children who are really dead must be over 50,000 by this stage of the genocide.
Sharon, after umpteen surgeries and lips which seem to be growing by the week, came across as a ranting old woman, who has lost touch with reality. Her emotional and erratic appearance, which included lots of head shaking and high-pitched yelping, probably harmed the Zionist cause more than it helped. Her organising of a letter, signed by her husband Ozzy and 200 other ‘celebrities’ to complain that the BBC, a Zionist organisation since its inception, was ‘pro-Palestine,’ has merely cemented her place on the wrong side of history, a side from which nobody’s legacy will survive.
‘War Pigs’ in the 1970s was an anti-imperial Black Sabbath song which caught the imagination of young people across the world.
Yet now, its former singer, Ozzy Osborne and his Zionist wife, have completely obliterated their own legacy in only a few weeks, ironically only weeks before the frontman’s demise.
For how can a legacy be great when covered, as it will be, by the blood of thousands of innocent children?
Not only did she bury Ozzy last week, but she seems to have buried what remains of her already-questionable conscience.
